Well, this is awkward...

I don't like awkward.

I don't like the word. I don't like the idea. I don't like awkward.

After reading the preceding three sentences, those who know me might say, "No, trust me, you don't have any problems with awkward." To that I would most likely respond with a tweaked and censored Baby Mama quote by Amy Poehler (which can be seen here.)

The word "awkward" is incredibly overused. It doesn't matter what the situation is, if it is the least bit weird or uncomfortable we say it is awkward.

"He is so awkward."
"I look so awkward in this dress."
"Look at that car. Talk about awkward."

I think the word has become just a popular trendy term that is an easy go-to when we have run out of adjectives in our minds.

Take, for example, being introduced to a friend of a friend. You meet and it's a little weird. You don't really know them. They don't know you. The conversation can't even be considered small talk. So, afterwards you say, "Man/Omg Girl, I just met my homeboy's homeboy and it was so awkward." Many people would agree, that was an awkward situation. However, I don't think "awkward" is the word. Get a thesaurus, youthful America.

The idea of awkward is frustrating to me. In the previous hypothetical situation, can't you see the potential "awkward" moment coming? You are meeting someone who you have never ever met, so things are not going to be completely "normal." Discomfort is inevitable and you can smell it coming.

Wait just a second, friends. Don't get me wrong and think that I don't believe awkward exists because it most definitely does. Sometimes you can't escape it.

All in all, I think I am just tired of the word. We have better vocabularies than we think. We are smarter than the overuse of "awkward" makes us look. That's all that I mean.

So, go out there and get into some weird situations and do me a favor, refuse to deem them "awkward."

Speaking of overuse of "awkward," I used it 18 times in this post (including the title).
